Dogs jump. Why? Why, why, why? It’s sooo frustrating, right? It might be the most common complaint we hear. Ironically it is also one of the easiest behaviors to stop. I know people are struggling with this. I know owners are trying “everything” and spending months or even years managing their dog (or worse yet paying trainers who don’t know how to stop it or won’t be honest about how to stop it) when we could stop this behavior in a few minutes.

So, if you’re into seeing real change real fast, this episode is for you because I’m going to tell you exactly how to do it with or without an e-collar. You can also apply this information to other nuisance behaviors your dog might have.

Minute-by-Minute Breakdown

  • 00:00 – Kati Peppe introduces Off Leash and Unfiltered and Diamond Canine’s e-collar specialization.
  • 02:00 – Dogs often jump because it’s a natural behavior and they’re overexcited or over-aroused.
  • 04:00 – Kati says there’s no reason to suffer with jumping and some clients fail to set boundaries.
  • 06:00 – You can stop jumping immediately because dogs jump when no one has told them not to.
  • 08:00 – E-collar correction effectiveness varies per dog; some require much higher intensity to work.
  • 10:00 – People often bark commands without issuing consequences, which fails to stop jumping.
  • 12:00 – Keep the training conversation simple: teach ‘don’t jump’ instead of always asking for sit or place.
  • 14:00 – If you always prevent jumping you can’t train it—allow the dog to jump so you can correct.
  • 16:00 – Apply the correction as the dog starts or before jumping; early corrections are more effective.
  • 18:00 – Insert the correction early to lower arousal and block the neural pathway toward jumping.
  • 20:00 – Earlier, meaningful corrections reduce the chance the behavior will regenerate.
  • 21:00 – Use a real, meaningful correction—not a light tap—this isn’t about obedience cue levels.
  • 24:00 – This e-collar use involves noticeable discomfort; subtle signals won’t reliably stop jumping.
  • 26:00 – Be consistently meaningful every time; inconsistency creates loopholes dogs will test.
  • 28:00 – Higher-intensity, brief corrections reduce retesting and decrease future failure opportunities.
  • 30:00 – If the dog starts the jumping sequence, you must deliver the consequence even if they stop.
  • 35:00 – Recommendation: use a leash-pop or a reliable E-Collar like the Mini Educator for practical correction.
