Are you worried about inadvertently creating negative associations if you correct your dog? You’re not alone. We hear this a lot. Especially around fussing in the kennel, but there are hundreds of contexts this can be a concern, and luckily, they are all mostly handled the same way.

It’s really important that your dog understands that consequences are in fact tied to their behavior, and not random or tied to only to a “thing” in the environment. This means you should know exactly how to show your dog which behavior leads to the correction, and what kind of behavior results in the absence of a correction.

Your dog needs to see a clear pattern. If you are consistent, over time the pattern should only become more and more clear. So time is your best friend (in conjunction with consistency).

Over the years I have dealt with many dogs that didn’t like the kennel, and I’ve never had one decide the kennel was bad because we corrected them while they were inside of it—never. That’s a pretty good record. And again, you can apply this logic to any context, not just the crate, but that is a very common concern.

The other good news is, even if you do somehow manage to accidentally create a negative association that you didn’t want to, it’s usually super fixable by simply digging in and showing your dog a new pattern. Seeing is believing, and new experiences create new associations, easily.
